Friendly Anglican church on Bolton Road, with Jesus at the centre

Nearly 150 years of worship and witness in this place

Jesus Christ

Our gratitude to Jesus is what drives us. He loved us first and died for us on the cross so we can know true freedom and purpose and be safe with God forever. This is a great gift given by a gracious God.

We are keen to do things from God, from a sense of thankfulness to him.

This makes us want to share what we know to be true.

Our vision

The vision of St James’ is to listen to and love people as the first priority. We want to build relationships and we understand that takes time. We are ready to share Jesus with people through the way we live and with words, when appropriate. We invite others to join our anglican worshipping community.

Inclusive

St James’ is an inclusive church which celebrates difference. That means we are committed to helping everyone feel this is a safe space to be who God made them to be. There are screens and a hearing loop, accessible toilets, and wheelchair access at the side door. If you need to get up and move in the service, take a little break, or you concentrate better with something to do, you’ll fit right in. St James is part of the Inclusive Church Network

Team

St James Community Church has a strong lay team: church wardens, PCC, worship team, pastoral care and much more. This amazing team is lead by the Priest in Charge Rev Canon Tracy Milne, Assistant Curate Rev Marianne Clough and Hospital Chaplain Rev Andrew Heslop, who is authorised to officiate here. We believe everyone has a ministry, everyone has a part to play and we strive to help people share the gifts God has given them.

Shell

St James the Great was one of Jesus’ disciples and he is often represented with the emblem of a scallop shell, you see as our logo. St James was a fisherman and his body was buried in Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain, where such shells are plentiful. The shells were used as a symbol for pilgrimage as the pattern shows grooves all meeting together at a single point. Today, the shell reminds us that Jesus calls us to himself from all directions, and we take that good news message back out to others.

Visiting us

Our church is on a main bus route and the stop is right outside on Bolton Road. Buses that stop there include the 640, 641 and A2 Flyer. There is parking on Beaufort Grove including disabled parking bays. When you come in, you will be welcomed and offered a cuppa just as if you were visiting someone in their home. If you have young ones with you, you’ll find there is plenty for them to do. We look forward to seeing you!
